New Environmental Justice Grants Map Highlights Impacts of EPA Fund Cancellations
March 20, 2025 – The Environmental Data & Governance Initiative and Public Environmental Data Partners have launched a map displaying environmental justice grants made by the US Environmental Protection Agency through the Inflation Reduction Act since 2024.
The EPA Administrator previously announced his intention to cancel many of the agency’s grants and contracts and their status is quickly changing: Some recipients have lost access to funds, received notices of termination, or find themselves uncertain of their status. This map displays a large number of potentially affected grants and will be updated periodically as additional information becomes available. The map highlights the wide-ranging and fundamental efforts that EJ entails—from upgrading aging sewer lines to workforce development training, K-12 STEM education, and wildfire resilience.
EPA’s EJ grants under IRA were developed according to high standards and in strict adherence with federal laws, policies, and regulations. The programs were designed to be transparent, accountable, and impactful.
Following rigorous competition and vetting, groups that received grants have already initiated projects: hiring staff, contracting with local businesses, and beginning to deliver results to improve health and environmental benefits for America.
For less than the cost of a single stealth bomber, these hundreds of projects would reach thousands of communities and improve the lives of countless Americans.
In addition to the health and environmental benefits these grants are carefully designed to achieve, they also bring overall economic benefits. (One report found that every $1 of NIH funded research generated $2.56 in economic activity.)
