Compensation: $37.86 per hour; half-time employment with retirement contributions and paid vacation, holiday, and sick leave 

Expected hours: 20 hours per week; flexible schedule

Location: Fully remote 

Position Description

The Development Lead will develop and implement the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative’s (EDGI’s) fundraising strategy. They will help EDGI build and activate its network to generate invitations for grants, particularly with foundations, as well as diversifying the organization’s fundraising strategy for sustainable, mission-aligned financial support. The Development Lead will work with EDGI’s Coordinating Committee and working groups to identify and secure relevant funding opportunities. They will lead strategy and networking as well as crafting letters of interest, grant proposals, and other needed materials.

The Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI) is a collaborative, horizontally organized community of caring and committed members, primarily volunteers, from multiple academic institutions and non-profit and grassroots organizations. EDGI is an environmental organization focused on issues of data justice, environmental justice, accessibility, and corporate and government accountability.  

Specific tasks may include:

  • Collaborate to develop a strategy for sustainably funding the organization
  • Identify new sources of funding; coordinate and implement initial approach
  • Network, develop, and manage relationships with new and existing funders on EDGI’s behalf, accurately representing EDGI’s projects and values
  • Develop materials to facilitate pitch conversations with funders
  • Coordinate letters of intent, grant applications, and other funding materials 
  • Coordinate and contribute to EDGI’s Annual Report
  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of giving campaigns (for example, Giving Tuesday, seasonal appeals, etc.) and donor events
  • Help EDGI’s coordinating committee manage an institutional budget and related materials such as projections and fundraising goals.
  • Lead fundraising meetings and be present at open coordinating committee meetings to report on fundraising activities.
  • Utilize multiple modes of external communication including donor emails, social media campaigns, major donor phone calls, and Zoom meetings

Qualifications and desired skills:

  • Proven track-record of fundraising for nonprofits.
  • Knowledge of environmental and climate change funding landscapes and/or open technology/transparency/civics funding landscapes. 
  • Ability to take initiative and anticipate team needs, working without a manager.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.

Preferred additional qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a similar role.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated interest in environmental and climate justice.
  • Comfort working both independently and in teams; able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and non-hierarchically.
  • Experience in remote collaboration and communication; comfort working remotely with colleagues in multiple time zones via Slack, Zoom, and other online tools.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines. 
  • Familiarity with some or all of the following: MailChimp, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite, social media, and other tools used for donor engagement. 

Terms of Employment

  • Ongoing, part-time employment (20 hours per week)
  • Estimated annual gross income of $39,378 (the .5FTE part time equivalent to $78,756 per year) 
  • Benefits including paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave; flexible schedule
  • Anticipated start date: November 1, 2021

About EDGI

EDGI is a distributed collaboration operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the non-profit Multiplier, with volunteer members across North America. EDGI works to:

  1. Investigate and analyze the inner workings of federal environmental policy, through interviewing of agency staff, as well as data and documentary collection and analysis;
  2. Monitor changes to, and explore standards for, web-based information about the environment, energy, and climate provided by the federal government;
  3. Develop new ways of making federal environmental data more accessible to the public;
  4. Imagine, conceptualize, and move toward environmental data justice;
  5. Prototype new organizational structures and practices for distributed, collective, effective work rooted in justice.
